We are all aware of the coronavirus pandemic that is presently going on all over the globe. It has been a cause of destruction for the past two years and has yet not come to a halt. However, now we have the vaccines that are helpful and assisting people in fighting against the virus. Also, people are a bit immunized now. There have been several vaccines discovered and produced by scientists. They are proven to be effective and avoid critical situations like death.
The two vaccines, namely Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19, are prominent in protecting humans against Covid-19 for several years. The only condition is that the virus should not spread much higher in the consequent months. This data is confirmed by a study that experts conducted.
Duration of protection with vaccines
The vaccination process has been going on worldwide for months and has proven to be effective. The only question that arises in human beings before getting vaccinated is about the level of protection they provide. We are yet not aware of the duration for which the Covid-19 vaccines are active. A few vaccines that are produced for viruses like influenza are capable only of providing essential protection. Such vaccines are required to be updated every year. However, the well-known vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella confer protection for a longer time.
The duration for which a vaccine supports the human body and protects it against the virus depends on several factors. The major factors involved in the specification of time are the vaccine’s strength and the pace of evolvement of the virus. The responsive nature of the human body against disease is also a deciding factor for the effectiveness of vaccinations.
The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Vaccines
The vaccines, namely Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, protect Covid-19 significantly and use a novel platform called the Messenger RNA. This novel platform allows and guides the human system to fight against SARS-CoV-2, which leads to Covid-19 disease.
The mRNA vaccines have been proven highly effective and have surpassed the assumptions and beliefs of scientists at a significant level. It has shown unpredicted potential and efficiency in safeguarding human life from the coronavirus. However, it is still not clear about the exact duration the vaccine works.
Studies and experiments to know the effectiveness of vaccines
The researchers and experts recruited approximately 41 people who were given doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to get a precise result. Eight of these participants had previously been Covid infected. The researchers started collecting the blood samples of these participants at a duration of 3, 4, 5, 7, and 15 weeks just after the first shot of the vaccine. The results that came out were highly unexpected and unpredicted.
The vaccine proved to be a great success as it could induce potent antibodies that respond against the virus. These antibodies were more effective in people who had recently recovered from the Covid-19 infection.
The experts and researchers collected samples of lymph nodes during the same period from about 14 people. None of these participants were infected with SARS-CoV-2 before the vaccination. This experiment and study showed the production and emergence of short-lived molecular structures called germinal centers. The germinal centers are the glands that are responsible for holding our immune system cells and usually swell responding to an infection or disease.
After the proper study, it was found out that these germinal centers formed in the lymph node of the lungs of human beings infected with Covid-19 before. First off, this area is complicated to operate in. However, the vaccinated ones show the evolution of these structures in the armpits, which are easily approachable.
What are the germinal centers, and why are they important?
The germinal centers and their presence in the human body are of utmost importance. They act as the boots camp in the immune system of the human body, as said by the Senior Author, Ali Ellebedy, an Immunologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. These are the tiny molecular structures that are responsible for guiding and instructing our immune cells. Some of these immune cells are also the memory cells of the human body that are present to retain information about the virus for the future.
However, we are not sure about the duration of these boot camps, but animal studies previously showed their presence to be a few weeks long. Recent studies have shown that the vaccinated participants can produce the germinal centers, which continue to be active and strong enough to remain for 15 weeks. The experts made the study based on their partially vaccinated participants or those who had received the single dose.
Are the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines beneficial?
Dr. Amesh Adalja, the Infectious Disease Specialist and Senior Scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore mention that the above research and study display commendable results. According to him, the study confirms that the vaccinations provided are efficient in bringing about positive responses from the human immune system. He also mentioned that these vaccinations are competent and long-lasting, making the procedure more optimistic.
Ellebedy further added to the statements that this was the first study to discover immediate evidence and result in germinal centers’ long-lasting effect. However, this study did not involve the participants who were vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine as the scientists are optimistic that the results would be pretty identical. The Moderna vaccine, also being an mRNA, is assumed to give positive results.
The existence and period for the capability of our immune system against the Covid-19 virus are still not confirmed. However, Ellebedy and his entire research team are still working upon the cells and studying all the possible impacts of these vaccines.
