four-day workweek

You must have heard about the latest buzz in the workplace. Yes, we are talking about the trending four-day week work module. As it turns out, the rumors of this module come out to be true. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is planning to discuss the same with the government to help people improve their productivity and enjoy fewer working hours for the same income.

Although it is just a plan, looking at the current scenario and advancement in Artificial Intelligence, it seems that it would be best to implement this module as soon as possible. But why would any business accept this? What will be the effect on productivity? Can we consider it for the long run?

The above questions can be answered only when you understand the complete structure of a four-day workweek module. A 4 day work week is an initiative to increase the efficiency and productivity of prospective employees ultimately. It allows the employees to reduce their stress and gives them the freedom to work thoroughly to reach the targets in fewer days.

Some of the implications of a four day work week module are elaborated below:

Increase in productivity

One of the significant advantages of having a four-day workweek is an increase in the overall productivity at work. Different studies were performed to prove that a four-day workweek is more effective than the traditional five-day workweek.

According to Stanford University’s in-depth examination, productivity is deeply correlated to a four-day workweek. It concluded that overworked employees are less productive as compared to those who work an average or typical working week

Another study made by a New Zealand-based company, Perpetual Guardian, revealed that their employees maintained the same productivity level and showed improvements in job satisfaction, teamwork, work/life balance, and company loyalty after conducting a trial four-day workweek.

These studies are enough to reveal the truth behind the four-day workweek structure. It is not very surprising that many of the world’s most productive countries like Norway, Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany adopted the four-day workweek structure and are now enjoying great productivity levels.

Better Employee Engagement

A 4 day work week setup provides enough time for the employees to take a rest and make a comeback accepting new challenges on the way. It makes the employees happier and ultimately reduces the stress among employees as their working hours are reduced. Further, it also ensures that the employees take less sick leaves and focus more on their productivity

Sweden also conducted a trial study from 2015 to 2017 by adopting a shorter work week model. Nurses were allowed to work only six hours a day for five days a week. The trial showed tremendous results as the nurses lodged fewer sick hours, displayed better health and mental well-being.

They also showered greater engagement as they arranged 85% more activities for patients in their care. It brought a massive impact on the behavior of employees and their attitude towards work. You can expect a better outcome from your employees only if you ensure that they enjoy their work and are happy working for you.

Environmental Benefit

Another great benefit of having a four-day workweek model is that you will ultimately contribute to a safe and healthy environment. It was found that countries with shorter working hours typically have a minor carbon footprint contribution to the atmosphere.

An amazing study conducted by the US state of Utah showed that they managed to add significant ecological impact by reducing working hours. The study concluded that during the first ten months of its effectiveness, the project saved over US$1.8m (£1.36m) in energy costs and a reduction of at least 6,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Further, it also showed that if employees’ commute was included in the study, Utah could have saved 12,000 metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to removing 2,300 cars off the road for one year, simply by reducing one day less work a week. That’s the power of reducing one day of work from a week.

Conclusion

Considering the current pandemic scenario and focusing on social distancing, a four-day workweek structure seems to be an effective way to increase the proficiency and productivity of employees. It will save a lot of money for the entrepreneurs as the fixed charges would get reduced by reducing a day’s work every week. The above implications show us that it is better to adopt these changes and accept this module.

Moreover, it will also help the business proliferate as employees’ increased productivity will ultimately lead to finishing off targets before time. Please stay connected with us for more information about the four-day workweek module, technology, and related blogs.
